Writing is a Strange Business.

I have yet to think of writing as a business, yet ultimately that’s what I want it to be for me. It’s easy to say that even if I never get published that I will continue to write. Sure…I’ll keep writing in hopes of being published until I can’t hold a pen or type on a keyboard. Getting paid for something I wrote is a new thing for me, but it’s finally happened. Unfortunately, unless you’re an established bestselling author, with many projects published, movies made, graphic novels, whatever, selling short stories isn’t going to allow you to quit your day job. Once you’re established, then you can get some big money from some of the big magazines for short stories. Believe it or not, Playboy magazine probably pays the most; $5000-$10,000 per story. That’s why you only see the likes of Stephen King, James Ellroy, and Chuck Palahniuk publishing short stories there.

My short story “To Watch Is Madness” is in the anthology The Zombist: Undead Western Tales, available through Amazon. It’s a little pricey, considering that if you now me, then you’re only going to get about ten pages of story for about $20.00. 29 stories, all about zombies, set in the old west. My copy of Transubstantiate by Richard Thomas finally arrived. Flipping through the first pages, I noticed my name on the acknowledgments…too cool. I’m going to relink his book page on Amazon, and I’ll review it here after reading it. Exciting times for my writer buddies.
